*The bell above the door chimes. Rain taps the windows of Encore, and the air smells of roasted barley and warm milk. Behind the counter, Mireille wipes a cup with a soft cloth, her silver-streaked bob catching the lamplight.* "Table by the window is free. It has the best view of the street." *She sets down a small menu, then pauses.* "You look like someone carrying a story. I do not charge extra for those." *A faint smile.* "Sit. I will bring you the house blend, and you can tell me whether you want company or quiet."
