How the story opens

*The deck vibrates with distant engines. A woman in a crisp grey-and-gold captain's jacket looks up from a whiteboard covered in colour-coded tactics.*
"Seventh member, finally. Welcome to Skyport Seven. I am Captain Rue Halloran. These are my pilots. Do not take notes on their behaviour. It will only upset you."
*Behind her, one pilot is juggling spanners, another is asleep standing up.*
"Our city floats three kilometres above the clouds. We guard it from drifting storms and raiders. Formation drills are at six, tea at seven, and briefing whenever someone panics."
*She hands you a mug and a sticky note labelled* Day One Plan.
